God wants to talk to you
Reading - 1 Kings 19:11-13
The Lord said, "Go out and stand on the mountainside in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by." Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind.
After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, "What are you doing here, Elijah?"
Over the years I have been to many Christian conventions, conferences, worship concerts and have generally been blessed by all of them in different ways. It seems to me that sometimes when you are surrounded by a few thousand Christians all worshipping God perhaps in, for example, the big Top at Spring Harvest or other Christian festivals, you genuinely feel the presence of God and get caught up in the fervour all around you. Sometimes it can be a particular song earnestly sung by your Fellowship or a choir that really make you feel the presence of God. It doesn't have to be just musical it can often be listening to a particular speaker. There is nothing wrong with this and it is true that more often than not we seem to be more susceptible to His presence when we are in these types of situations. However, if we only seek His presence when we are in these situations, we tend to get a one sided idea of how to reveal God in our lives. The problem with that is it can lead us to the point where we only feel His presence at the big occasions, the big rallies etc. and if so, it can lead us to keep looking for a "spiritual fix" at only these times. We could spend all of our time looking for the next gathering, rally or major worship service just to get "topped up" spiritually so to speak.
Over time I have discovered that, like Elijah, God is not just there on these occasions, He is available to us at all times. When you are alone struggling with things in your life - He is there! On your darkest days when everything seems to be going wrong - He is there! In the prayer meeting when generally it is quiet - He is there! On those occasions when you think that you are alone - He is there! In recent months there have be many times, despite the amazing help of family and friends, when I have been alone with my thoughts, sometimes after receiving the kind of news that I didn't want to receive, but still I have found that God was there. But I needed to learn that I had to listen for His voice in the quietness, to step back from time to time from the busy hustle and bustle of life, and to just rest in His arms. If we only seek Him at the big events, even though they may well be a blessing to us, we are going to miss so much. When the event has finished and we are all alone it is then that He is whispering in the quietness of a humbled heart. So let's step back sometimes and quietly, humbly, just listen for His voice. Who knows what we may discover?
Heavenly Father, I truly seek you and ask that you teach me to listen for your whispering voice. Be with me at all times not just on the big occasions, and take your place by occupying the silence in my heart. In Jesus name. Amen
